Hillhurst & West Hillhurst, Calgary Homes
Hillhurst is west of 14th Street and West Hillhurst is west of 19th street. These neighbourhoods are close to downtown Calgary, the University of Calgary, the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) Polytechnic and a large number of shopping and dining opportunities. The area was established in 1907 with construction really taking off in the ‘40s to deal with post WWII housing shortages. “Victory homes” were constructed for returning WWII soldiers – small by modern standards, usually less than 1000 square feet. Many war veterans took it upon themselves to renovate these homes and some are still standing today, alongside modern homes, condos and townhome complexes. Infill properties are also a growing home style – new homes that replace older and less useful buildings.
