New Year, New Resolutions for Your Home

Posted by Smart Calgary Homes Blogging Team on Wednesday, December 28th, 2011 at 9:40am.

It’s that time of year again, the time where we all make resolutions to improve our lives – get fit and healthy, go further in our careers, spend more quality time with friends and family – but it’s also the time to make resolutions for our homes. Here are five simple resolutions that will improve both the look and function of your home:

Add a little colour: The colour of the year for 2012 is Tangerine Tango, a “vivacious and appealing reddish orange” that will add both depth and warmth to any room in your home. If you’re worried about committing to paint, incorporate the colour with decorative pillows, paintings, or even curtains. Don’t wait until the summer to bring it in, do it now and ward off the post-holiday winter dullness in the home that often occurs at this time of the year. Tangerine Tango is so versatile it’ll keep looking great all the way through spring, summer, fall, and next winter.

Don’t just recycle, upcycle: Upcycling is gaining in popularity, and for good reason. The practice of making new, interesting items out of old ones not only prevents excessive waste, it also reduces the cost of redecorating or accessorizing your home. Need ideas? Look to the expert on the subject, Danny Seo, for a variety of tips and tricks; and check out his book, Upcycling: Create Beautiful Things with the Stuff You Already Have.

Save water: Changing over your faucets and showerheads from conventional to water-saving is both good for the environment, and for your water bill. If you don’t want to do an overhaul of your taps, do a once-over on them, as well as your toilets, to make sure there are no leaks. One drop per second on a leaky faucet wastes as much as 10,000 litres of water per year – a problem that is typically easy, and inexpensive to repair.

Go au naturel: Natural tones and materials are easy to come by, and easy to incorporate in any home. Try using them in unexpected places, like wood on countertops, slate in bathrooms, or stone on backsplashes.

Organize your drawers: The beginning of the year is the perfect time to start fresh, and what better way to do so than by getting organized? Tackle that dreaded junk drawer (and every other one that has lost control…) by transferring its items to smaller containers within the drawers; small boxes, Tupperware containers, or baskets work great. Opt for containers without lids, so the contents are easily seen, organized, and replaced.
