Back-to-school sales are looming over hapless children and people are starting to plan their fall activities. However, that doesn’t mean that Calgary outdoor events aren’t thriving. Take a look at some of the mid-August events happening right now and coming our way:
Calgary International Reggae Festival
August 21
Shaw Millenium Park – 1220-9 Avenue SW
11am-11pm
This annual festival is on its 8th year in 2010. If you’re not a Reggae fan, come out anyway, because this is a great family event featuring arts & crafts, food, kids play area and a beer garden for the adults! For more information, check out the link above.
Global Fest
August 20-28
Elliston Park (17th St SE and 60 St SE)
6pm-11:15pm
This is an annual festival that had its beginnings in the Calgary Fireworks Festival’s search for a good place for fireworks. A meeting with the International Avenue Arts and Culture Centre produced a new vision: GlobalFest. This festival features food, vendors, films and entertainment from many different cultures as well as a beautiful fireworks festival. The link above provides more information.
Expo Latino 2010
August 27-29
Various Venues (see link for details)
Various times (see link for details)
The Hispanic Arts Society was incorporated on June 26, 1987 to promote Hispanic arts and culture to the public. The Hispanic Festival 2010 presents Expo Latino as one of its most anticipated music festivals, featuring dancing, food, live music, art and beer gardens.
Festivals began as religious celebrations, but evolved into celebrations of many things, cultures and subjects. Calgary has over 80 festivals in a calendar year, so every month, there's sure to be something going on! Check back soon for more information about further festivals and events.
