Calgary September Festivals 2010

fireworks_388September is drawing near, so it's time to mark these festivals on your calendar!  Unfortunately, there are also some festivals that are not happening this year, apparently.  If you have information about a forgotten festival or further information about a listed festival, please comment!

Barbecue on the Bow Festival

Eau Claire Festival Market

This is Canada’s oldest barbecue festival and the annual “Alberta Championship” where Canadian and American chef teams vie for prizes and trophies and the title of “Alberta Champion”.  There are a number of events and activities as well as the competition.  There is a craft tent for kids, stage entertainment, talent search, vendors, BBQ demos, BBQ foods and The General Store, featuring locally sourced Alberta vegetables and other foods.

Calgary Highland Games
Saturday, September 4th, 2010
Springbank Park for All Seasons

Featuring piping, drumming, feats of strength and entertainment, this is a family-friendly event that celebrates all things Scottish. Events begin at 8:30 with the solo piping and drumming events and “end” with a ceilidh and dancing at 5:30 – although the celebrations may carry on well after that point!

Not enough information was found about this festival for us to list where/when/what’s happening or whether the festival is not happening this year.  If anyone has any information, please list it in the comments!

C-Jazz Festival

Unfortunately, this festival has been cancelled.  Read more about the cancellation here (CBC News).

Heritage Park Old Time Fall Fair
September 11-12, 2010
Heritage Park

This fair celebrates Western Canada’s past, with antique machinery displays, various hands-on demonstrations, competitions in baking, produce and livestock and a complimentary pancake breakfast for the first 500 guests who pay their admission between 9:30 AM and 10:00 AM.

ArtCity Festival

Public venues around Calgary

From the website: Artcity Festival is Calgary's annual celebration of visual art, architecture, and design. For 10 days each year, new artworks, installations, and projects are temporarily inserted into the urban landscape for discovery and engagement by ordinary citizens and interested parties.

The thematic banner this year is “Boom or Bust”.  The website lists venues for events and galleries and showings in such varied places as Downtown Calgary, Stephen Avenue Mall, The Plaza Theatre and more.  Keep your eyes open for the celebrations of visual art around the city!

Calgary Art Walk Festival
September 18-19, 2010

The Calgary Artwalk is conducted through inner Calgary… Downtown, Inglewood and the Beltline art galleries will be pulling out their finest and freshest for this fun art tour.  The website will shortly be featuring more information about the events associated with the Artwalk and presently displays a map of venues.

Word on the Street - Literacy celebration

Word on the Street is indefinitely on hiatus in Calgary, according to the best information that we can find.  It is still going on in Vancouver, Saskatoon, Kitchener, Toronto and Halifax.

Calgary International Film Festival
September 24 – October 3rd, 2010
Globe Cinema, Cineplex – Eau Claire Market, Plaza Theatre, John Dutton Theatre, EMMEDIA Gallery and Crowfoot Library

This is the 11th annual festival celebrating films from around the world.  There will be 220 films screened this year and celebrated by a variety of events.  The Calgary International Film Festival is one of the largest film festivals in Canada and has drawn near 50,000 film fans to screening venues.

I found some time to go to the film festival this year. It was actually a lot bigger then I expected. I can't wait to go again next year. Hopefully more celebrities will show up next time.
